Test materials   ISM - industrial SHRINKAGE monitor (SHRINKAGE)

This information explains the use of the Industrial Shrinkage Monitor. With this monitor it is possible to measure shrinkage during cleaning-processes in an objective way. One can choose for the cotton as well as the woollen version.

    Description of the monitor

Shrinkage during cleaning-processes has to be prevented as much as possible. To control the shrinkage, process control with test materials is necessary. CCD has developed a monitor that can help you with this.

It is often difficult to distinguish shrinkage of the articles from shrinkage due to the process. With this monitor you can determine the effect of the process independent from the quality of the materials that are processed.

There are two versions of the shrinkage monitors; the ISM-W1 and the ISM-C1.

ISM-W1
The ISM-W1 is based on standards of the international wool secretary. The monitor consists of a set of 3 woollen cloths. On these cloths a square of blue threads has been woven in. In this square a CCD-stamp is placed (see figure). As help for defining the horizontal and vertical direction the amount of coloured threads is different in the two directions.

ISM-C1
The ISM-C1 is produced from standardised cotton (ISO 456). The ISM-C1 consists of a set of 6 cotton cloths on which a stamp with a rectangular has been placed.

    Measuring

The monitors have to be processed 5-10 times with the normal process. The shrinkage can be measured after every cycle by carefully measuring the distance between the horizontal and vertical lines. If shrinkage has occurred, the distance between these lines is decreased. The percentage of shrinkage is calculated based on the size before cleaning.
